The August-Proof Garden: How to make your outdoor furniture last in Dubai
Living in Dubai, we all know the drill. From November to April, the garden is the best room in the house. Then May hits, the humidity spikes, and we beat a hasty retreat to the air conditioning. For the next five months, our outdoor furniture is left to battle some of the most brutal conditions on the planet.
If you have spent any time on the community Facebook groups, you will have seen the horror stories: rattan that has snapped like crackers, "stainless" steel covered in rust, and cushions that have faded from navy blue to a sad, dusty lilac.
At Maze, we have spent years testing materials in the UAE climate. Here is our honest guide on what actually survives a Dubai summer and how to look after it.
1. The Myth of "Maintenance Free"
No matter what a salesperson tells you, nothing in Dubai is truly maintenance free. The combination of intense UV, high salinity near the coast, and the inevitable "shamal" dust storms means your furniture needs a bit of love.
The good news is that if you buy the right materials, "maintenance" only takes about ten minutes a month.
2. Aluminium is King
If you want furniture that can sit in 50 degree heat without warping, aluminium is the only way to go. Unlike iron or cheap steel, aluminium does not rust.
Our Aluminium Collections are all finished with a high-grade powder coating. This isn't just for looks; it creates a shield against the salt air and the sun. To keep it in top shape, all you need is a quick rinse with a garden hose once a week to get the sand off. If you let sand sit on the frames for months, it can act like sandpaper and scratch the finish.
3. The Truth About Rattan
We love the look of rattan, but not all rattan is built for the Middle East. Natural wicker will literally fall apart in one season here. You need PE (Polyethylene) Rattan.
Our rattan is UV-stabilized, meaning the colour is baked into the material rather than just painted on. This prevents the "peeling" effect you see on cheaper sets. Even so, the best thing you can do for rattan during the peak of summer is to keep it in the shade of a pergola or move it to a covered area if you can.
4. What to do with your cushions
This is the big one. Even with our high-performance fabrics, we always recommend bringing your cushions inside (or into a storage box) during the height of summer.
While our fabrics are water-resistant and UV-protected, the "summer dust" in Dubai is incredibly fine. If it gets deep into the fibres and then meets the 90 percent humidity of August, it can create a mess that is hard to clean.
Pro Tip: If you are staying in Dubai for the summer, give your cushion covers a quick wash in the machine before you store them. It ensures they are fresh and ready for that first "cool" evening in October.
5. To Cover or Not To Cover?
It sounds counterintuitive, but a cheap plastic cover can actually do more harm than good in the UAE. If the cover isn't breathable, it traps heat and moisture underneath, creating a "greenhouse" effect that can damage your furniture.
If you are going to use a cover, make sure it is a high-quality, breathable version. If you don't have one, you are actually better off leaving the furniture uncovered and giving it a proper wash once the weather breaks.
We are here to help
We want your Maze furniture to be a permanent fixture in your home, not something you have to replace every two years. If you are worried about how your specific set is holding up, or if you need advice on the best cleaning products for the UAE, pop into the Al Quoz showroom and have a chat.
We have lived through enough Dubai summers to know exactly what works.
