Why Your Dubai Balcony Probably Feels Like Wasted Space (And How to Fix It)
If you live in a high-rise in Downtown, Business Bay, or the Marina, you likely have a balcony that you rarely use.
Most of the time, it becomes a graveyard for a couple of spindly chairs or a drying rack. It is a bit of a tragedy, considering you are paying a premium for that view of the Burj Khalifa or the sunset over the Gulf.
The problem isn't the space itself, it is usually that the furniture people choose just isn't up to the task of surviving a Dubai summer.
We've all seen it plenty. People buy these delicate, "European style" bistro sets that look great in a showroom but end up pitted and rusted after one humid July night. Or worse, they buy something so lightweight that they have to drag it inside every time the wind picks up on the 40th floor.
To actually make a balcony feel like a room you want to spend time in, you have to move past the "temporary" mindset and invest in pieces that actually respect the environment we live in.
The Problem with "Thinking Small"
There is a common instinct to buy the smallest furniture possible for a balcony so you don't "crowd" it. In reality, that usually has the opposite effect.
A lot of tiny pieces make a terrace look cluttered and disorganised. If you look at how we’ve designed the Sicily collection, it’s all about visual transparency. We use a heavy-duty rope weave that feels substantial when you sit in it, but because you can literally see through the furniture to the horizon, it doesn't block your line of sight.
When your eyes can travel all the way to the view, the balcony feels infinite. If you put a solid, bulky plastic chair out there, you’ve essentially built a wall between yourself and the city. It is all about maintaining that flow.
Surviving the "Wind Tunnel" Effect
One thing nobody tells you when you move into a high-rise is just how aggressive the wind can be. A gentle breeze at ground level is a gale-force wind at the top of a tower.
If you’ve ever had to chase a stray cushion across your tiles during a sandstorm, you know exactly what we mean. This is why we are so pedantic about using powder-coated aluminium frames for our apartment ranges, like the Ibiza or the Saint Tropez.
Aluminium is the perfect material for a Dubai apartment because it is the "Goldilocks" weight. It is heavy enough that it isn't going to blow over when the wind picks up, but it is light enough that you aren't going to break your back trying to move it when you want to hose down the dust after a storm.
Plus, the powder-coating means it won't corrode from the salt air which can be a massive issue for anyone living close to the water in the Marina or on the Palm Jumeirah.
Addressing the Humidity Headache
We also need to talk about the "damp cushion" problem. In August, the humidity in Dubai is no joke.
Standard foam cushions act like giant sponges; they soak up the moisture overnight and never really dry out, which leads to that unpleasant mildew smell. It’s the main reason people stop using their outdoor furniture.
At Maze, we use Quick-Dry Flow-Through Foam. It’s an open-cell technology that lets water and air pass right through the middle.
Even if we get a rare downpour or a particularly heavy humid night, the core of the cushion stays dry. Pair that with Sunproof® fabrics that won't bleach or go brittle under the 50-degree UV rays, and you suddenly have a balcony that is actually functional all year round.
It’s About the Transition
Your balcony shouldn't feel like an "outside" area; it should feel like an extension of your lounge. If you have a sleek, modern interior, your balcony should reflect that.
Use a high-quality outdoor rug to create a thermal barrier so you aren't burning your feet on hot tiles, and choose a modular setup that lets you shift from a morning coffee spot to a place where you can actually host a couple of friends for a sundowner.
When you stop treating your balcony as a storage area and start treating it as a luxury outdoor room, the whole feel of your apartment changes. It’s about creating a space where you can actually sit back, forget the heat for a minute, and enjoy the city we live in.
